Predictions and Analysis: Lopez vs Ortiz 2/8/2024

Game Preview

Fight Preview

Top Rank Boxing’s Teofimo Lopez will defend his WBO junior welterweight championship against Jamaine Ortiz on Feb. 8 in Las Vegas, just three days ahead of Super Bowl LII. They will meet as part of an ESPN Thursday Night card at Michelob ULTRA Arena.

Lopez is one of the sport’s most promising young talents, and at his best when fighting at 140 pounds. Last June he defeated Josh Taylor with ease to earn a unanimous decision victory and retain the belt – marking a huge comeback win for this 26-year-old who had previously been knocked out by George Kambosos Jr. in one fight and relinquished three lightweight world titles to do so.

Interesting enough, two opponents for this title defense actually met as amateurs during the 2015 National Golden Gloves Tournament. Of course, fighting pros are different beasts altogether and this will mark their first meeting inside a professional ring against one another.

After defeating Pedro Campa in the 7th round to resume their winning ways, The Takeover defeated Sandor Martin on points to earn a shot at the world light-welterweight championship.

Ortiz is an impressive performer who has quickly advanced through the ranks with impressive wins and an admirable loss against Vasiliy Lomachenko. Hailing from Worcester, Massachusetts – his most recent victory came by way of unanimous decision over sturdy veteran Antonio Moran in September – Ortiz stands as a highly promising fighter who should only continue growing throughout his professional career. In his fifteenth professional fight, he faced Joseph Adomo for 8 rounds before being forced to settle for a majority draw.

Lopez could retain his title with ease on February 8 as his power and athleticism should prove too much for Ortiz who tends to fade in later rounds of fights.

On the undercard will be matches between Javier Martinez and Raul Salomon; Alan Garcia against Tomas Ornelas, and Abdullah Mason taking on Benjamin Gurment
