Predictions & Preview: Fiesta Bowl: Liberty vs Oregon 01-01-2024

Game Preview

The 23rd-ranked Liberty Flames and the 8th-rankedOregon Ducks will square off in the 53rd Annual Vrbo Fiesta Bowl at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. This will be the teams’ first encounter.

Facing the Oregon Ducks, the undefeated Liberty Flames earned their first-ever New Year’s Six bowl game, establishing program and Conference USA history. Liberty has qualified for 5 straight bowl matches since joining the FBS and has prevailed in 3 of the 4 that have been held. Although Conference USA is regarded by some as the most disappointing conference in NCAA football this season, Liberty earns all the credit for winning all of its games there. Some may think the club could face difficulty to compete in Oregon against an NCAA Football Playoff contender. Even though Liberty might be able to use almost its whole offensive line in this game, there is just too much talent difference between the two clubs. The Ducks scored second versus a PAC-12 schedule, while Chadwell’s offense finished third in EPA/Play versus one of the three simplest schedules.

Following a Pac-12 championship defeat to Washington, the Oregon Ducks’ prospects of qualifying for the NCAA Football Playoff were dashed. But the Ducks are getting ready for their 2nd Fiesta Bowl trip in the previous 4 years. The Ducks do have several opt-outs, though, including Troy Franklin, a wide receiver, Bucky Irving, a running back, Jackson Powers-Johnson, a center, and Khyree Johnson, a cornerback. Though there may be more to come, Nix’s presence gives me confidence that the Ducks can exploit Liberty’s defense, which ranks 71st within EPA/Play this campaign despite having an easier schedule previously. With a success percentage of 17th in the nation and fewer than 10 yards allowed per play this season, Oregon’s passing rush is extremely effective at keeping opponents from reaching the end zone. The Ducks are expected to be the hardest defense Liberty has faced this season, even with a few opt-outs.
