In the New Orleans Bowl, the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns and the Jacksonville State Gamecocks will square off. The bowl game takes place at Caesars Superdome on December 16.
With a defense that finished 2nd in yards surrendered (361.6 ypg), the Gamecocks (8-4) were able to win 6 of their 8 Conference USA games. The previous time out, Jacksonville State lost 20-17 on the road to New Mexico State after trailing by 14 points after the first quarter. With more than six minutes left, the running back Malik Jackson cut the deficit to 17-14 on an 11-yard scoring run. With 7 receptions, wide receiver Perry Carter gained 134 receiving yards, a game-high. Zion Webb, a senior quarterback in his seventh year, led the Gamecocks with two interceptions and 248 yards passed. For the current campaign, Webb, the Gamecocks’ dual-threat quarterback, has played most of the team’s snaps. He only completed passes for 1,281 yards and 5 touchdowns, but he has gained 7 running scores and 638 yards on the ground. He might have a big bowl game because of the weak rush defense that Louisiana will provide.
Though they have always been among the top teams in the Sun Belt Conference, the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns have declined in the 2 seasons after head coach Billy Napier left to go to Florida. The Ragin’ Cajuns (6-6) averaged 32.3 points per game and were in the center of the conference’s total offensive rankings. Scoring twenty-four points in the 2nd quarter of their 52–21 triumph at home against UL Monroe in the regular season finale. Chandler Fields, the quarterback for Louisiana, completed 18 of 20 throws for 246 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Elijah Davis had 14 carries for 109 yards and a 10-yard touchdown and receiver Neal Johnson tallied on touchdown receptions of 24 and 28 yards.
