On Saturday, the Pittsburgh Panthers will take on the Tennessee Volunteers at Acrisure Stadium. The Vols were impressive in their opener, gaining 569 yards of total offense in a 59-10 win over Ball State. Meanwhile, Pitt was hit-or-miss in a 38-31 win over West Virginia. Running back Rodney Hammond was an effective runner and receiver. USC transfer Kedon Slovis passed for 308 yards, but he was sacked five times. Pitt’s defense had a steady pass rush, but it allowed 190 yards rushing.
After their victory last week, Panthers Head Coach Pat Narduzzi met with the media to discuss the Vols and more. “We had a great Thursday night. I was happy not only for our fans but our football team. We closed that chapter last night. Chapter 1 is closed. We’ve got a lot of things we can learn from the game. I think there was a lot of learning moments that our kids took away. Obviously we did not play a perfect game. We never will, but it was just an average football game for us.” Their recent win might give them enough confidence for a match where they’ll need to play their best if they want to win.
Tennessee is the clear favorite heading into this match, even though historically it hasn’t been that way. These two teams have met three times before, with the most recent matchup coming last season. Kenny Pickett threw for 285 yards and scored a combined three touchdowns in a 41-34 win at Neyland Stadium in Tennessee. Pitt is 3-0 all-time against Tennessee. The previous matchups came back in 1980 (30-6 win) and 1983 (13-3 win). Despite a 7-6 record, Tennessee only finished 5-8 against the spread last season. The Volunteers did hit the over 10 times last season on the back of Hooker’s strong offense.
